Description: This presentation, session number 44PD, took place at the 2000 Annual Meeting of the Society of Actuaries, held October 15-18 in Chicago. “This session identifies meaningful, evolving dramatic insights arising from the studies and techniques of futurism. It shows how such insights are measured and affected by each other and existing dynamics through the use of actuarial models and related tools.” The presentation notes that “future studies basically takes over when the assumption of continuity in models is a weak assumption or in which there is some reason to believe that one might not be able to use the same model throughout the whole forecasting period.” Discussion from participants is included. Description: This paper defines a general model for arbitrary units and gives formulas for computing the variance and mean squared error of decrement estimators. It is observed that, in small studies, the mean squared error is reduced by counting lives, even if the probability of death depends somewhat on the amount of insurance. Description: The objective of this statement of principles is to articulate the current understanding of the significant principles that form the scientific framework underlying all areas of actuarial practice. The intended audience includes practicing actuaries, researchers and others, such as representatives of standard-setting organizations. This articulation is not immutable and should be revised if changes arise in our understanding of the key concepts and phenomena relevant to actuarial science, or if a better expression of the ideas is developed. This statement is the culmination of an effort that begin with the October 1991 draft by the SOA Committee on Actuarial Principles entitled “Principles of Actuarial Science. After incorporating numerous comments, that statement was published in Transactions of the Society of Actuaries XLIV, 1992.
